Archaeology has long ceased to be the preserve of
experts or vulgarizers and has become part of the
discourse of the educated man or woman. For accurate
information it is natural to turn to works of reference.
The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Archaeology is no mere
dictionary or repository of facts. It treats of major
themes opened up by archaeology, and it does so in a
dynamic manner. The aim is to engage the reader in
what is, by common consent, one of the major enterprises
of the age : nothing less than a dramatic extension
of the range of human awareness. The measure of the
success of this volume is the fact that the authors are
still active in their chosen fields and are as aware of
what remains to be discovered as they are well apprised
