This volume, intended for the general reader, throws a great deal of light on that very characteristic feature of the Middle Ages, the institution of Chivalry. The first chapter deals with the place of chivalry in history, describing its effects and influences. Subsequent chapters address the earliest beginnings of chivalry and its manifestations in France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, etc. Among other subjects dealt with are the Courtesy books, the romances of Chivalry, and the Chivalric ideal. The book is an excellent introduction to a field that has been greatly neglected in recent years.
