Foreword
The aim of this new textbook from the UK Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health is to assist candidates to make sound clinical judgements based not on learning by rote, but through application of fundamental principles and an understanding of the underpinning science.
The authors and editors are to be congratulated for producing an excellent, up-to-date resource.
Working through a diagnostic conundrum, from presentation, through careful history taking, and examination, supplemented by relevant investigations, is an intellectual challenge, a form of hypothesis testing, the goal of which is to arrive at a strong probability that the
null hypothesis you have formulated should be rejected. Of course, the great privilege and responsibility of medicine, is that this isnt a game – your patients are counting on you getting it right!
This textbook will stand you in good stead for the MRCPH examinations, but above all, I hope you will enjoy dipping into it again and again.
