This book is about being disabled and poor, and the social, cultural, and political processes that link these two aspects of living in, what has been characterized as, a ‘vicious circle’ (Yeo & Moore 2003). It is also about the strengths that people show when living with a disability and being poor – how they try to overcome their problems and make the best out of what little they have. The book provides a cross-cultural – and cross-national – perspective on the situation. It offers a unique contribution to an under-researched area and explores the ‘lived realities’ of people with disabilities from across the developing world. It redresses the imbalance of research into disability with an analysis of the poorer ‘global south’ countries, aiming to make a difference in the lives of poor disabled people.
