Hippolytus’s ‘Commentary on Daniel’ is the earliest extant Christian commentary. In it the author interprets the deeds and visions of Daniel against the backdrop of contemporary Roman persecution and eschatological expectation, thus providing much information about Christian affairs in the early third century. Throughout the work Hippolytus further discusses the distinctive Logos theology and makes mention of various liturgical practices involving baptism, anointing, the celebration of Easter and perhaps even the date of Christmas.
