The Christmas Oratorio of Johann Sebastian Bach is actually a set of six cantatas. The first cantata meditates on the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem. The second treats the angel’s message to the shepherds on that blessed night. The third explains how the shepherds reacted after they had heard the angel’s message. The fourth cantata meditates on the name Jesus, the name which the Baby received when He was circumcised. The fifth treats the arrival of the wise men in Jerusalem. The sixth concludes the history of the wise men’s visit.
